This is such a great story! Let me just start off by saying that I've never seen the movie, but the previews looked so cute I just had to get the book and I was surprised.
It looks like a children's story, and maybe the movie was, but it's so complex and dark and rich. Sure my 7-year-old nephew could read and understand the plot, but there's subtle spices flowing through this that make it a library keeper. The way DiCamillo talks to the reader asking if I can imagine how something would feel or did I know what "perfidy" meant. Well, I do now.
Is Kate DiCamillo joining the ranks of my favorite authors? Not sure yet, but she's got other books that look interesting, so I'll see.
Stranded on an Island: Yes.
Book Club donation: No. Don't get me wrong, I want you to read this, but give it back!

ReplyDeleteHiya! I just saw the movie. It was cute and definitely made for the little ones but adults could easily follow the darker tones. In all, I wasn't greatly impressed with the movie but I had a feeling the book would be 100 times better. I haven't read it but now that I've read your blog post about it, I guess I'll be hitting the bookstore the next time I'm out and about!
